Project Title: Renovation of Nyuel Juol Primary School
Project budget: $49,904.75
Implementing Partner: Children Aid South Sudan (CASS)
Location: Rubkona Town

Objectives:

  1. To improves basic service infrastructure in an area of education which provide conducive environment for both pupils and Teachers.
  2. Contribute to the Beyond Bentiu Response Strategy as it creates a conductive environment for return as well as building confidence amongst the population.

80% of total project fund received in CASS account prior to the start of project and the mobilization of materials process initiated through call for quotations from different suppliers. The pre-qualified hardware company was awarded contract for to supply all the hardware materials. All the construction materials procured ranging from cements, Iron sheets, Timbers of different sizes assorted nails, Iron bars hollow metals and sign post welded and designed including 6 metallic doors and 24 windows for 2 school blocks welded as well.
Total 72 pieces prepared by carpenter and transported, assembly in the site. Transport company engaged, signed contract and transported hardware materials from Juba to Bentiu via road. Total of 3 trips building sand,2 red marram and 2 core aggregate mobilized and transported to the site and total of 270 blocks molded at the site to start of the work.
General site clearance commenced with demolition of weak walls, ready for reinforcement of both blocks by inserting column and Iron bar to give strong wall. The doors and windows were fixed, plastering of both blocks done and shredding of floor accomplished. After fixing hollow section to support verandah shape, and screeding of verandah commenced and finally sign post fixed for visibility.
A colorful handover ceremony conducted and attended by Honorable State minister of education Unity state, Honorable minister for gender, and social welfare, representative in County commissioner office, UNMISS HOFO, PTR team, education director Rubkona county, PTA chairperson, Teachers and pupils. State minister of education thanked CASS for commendable renovation work done in Nyuel Juol primary school and appreciated UNMISS for the continue support to the people of Unity State.

Total of 2 (two) blocks for primary school renovated accommodating a number of pupils.

24 new windows and 6 new fabricated doors were fixed replacing the old ones.

Total of 8 columns were fixed supporting the weak wall and while maintaining the old roof due to its heat proof that keep classroom cold. The verandah shade that was none existence fixed and verandah screeded including the dusty floor before.

  •  Mobilizing of local materials like building sand, red marram and core aggregate delaying due to disagreement of excavating companies and local community
  • Sourcing of local burnt bricks is challenging due huge demand by humanitarian actors undertaking construction works in the state as the already available were bought all, hence CASS is seeing option of laying blocks for the construction.
  • Due to increase in population in Bentiu town, with few water points around, there is challenges of obtaining enough water for construction, hence delaying work progress
  • Additional 14 bags purchased to complete the veranda work with dragged the work up to end of May.

Deviations:
Due to high charges levied on boat owners hence leading to high transportation cost by boat owners and secondly the high offloading fees at port of entry normally charge by youth offloading the construction materials and couple with improved road accessibility between Wau and Bentiu, CASS management transported hardware materials from Juba to Bentiu by road.

The roofing of the 2 school blocks were not replaced as both CASS and UNMISS Engineers confirmed the old roofing design contained heat absorbers and would keep the class rooms cool and conducive for learning. Hence the school administration suggested that CASS donate the remaining Iron sheets should be used to construct Temporary learning Space.

Conclusion
The renovation of Nyuel Juol primary school will contribute to the improvement of educational standards by providing conducive environment for learning. This will equally reduce illiteracy rate and improve community standards of living.
